Today marks a historic shift in mobile communications with the announcement that Everything Everywhere will launch the first 4G services in the UK this fall, not only ahead of the competition it's ahead of any spectrum action that Ofcom initiate.
This auction along with the licence restriction form technical & political barriers to entry that any business would dream of and which rarely coincide to create a huge once in a lifetime market opportunity for Everything Everywhere. To top this, the social wave is getting stronger and stronger for more data intensive applications on the move and it's this social requirement that has probably spearheaded Ofcom off the fence to judge in favour of spectrum re-farming in the UK.
The final element of strategic importance is the sale of spectrum to the Three network. This sale has muted a small but powerful mobile brand in the political lobbying space. If it was not for this sale that gives Three vital spectrum to expand without dependency on any costly auction, the competitive pressure in the lobbying circle across the board of UK network operators might have been too much for the usually conservative Ofcom to reject.
So great news for UK mobile users today who can finally buy in to a new brand without any stigma on day one.
With all this good news today, it just seems strange that Ofcom have chosen a date associated with disaster and tragedy to grant the licence change to EE's network!
